Navratri 2023 is around and it is the time when most people from Hindu religion and from Indian Sub-continent immerse themselves into prayers and celebrations. Navratri festival this year will be observed for nine days starting from 15th October 2023 until 23rd October 2023 and will be followed by Dussehra next day 24th October 2023.

Navratri is an auspicious Hindu festival that is celebrated to worship the nine divine form of Goddess Durga.

It is the time when you can smell the aroma of various delicacies cooked in households using clarified butter and also share a divine experience from religious prayers and ceremonies.

Since Navratri days are considered the sacred nine days, many people often give up on non-vegetarian food and some even give up onion and garlic.

During these days people pray, meditate, fast and cook special delicious foods at home – for dinner or as fasting food.

These special dish recipes are often called the Vrat recipes or during Navratrithe Navratri food recipes.

The Story of Navratri

Goddess Durga is identified as Adi Parashakti or Param Shakti since she is considered to be the original creator, observer and destroyer of the whole universe.

Navratri festival is celebrated to worship the nine divine forms of Goddess Durga. There are many stories associated with Navratri but the most prominent one is about the battle between Goddess Durga and demon Mahishasur.

The demon Mahishasur had become a big threat to the whole universe and not even the gods were able to save the universe.

When there was nothing that the gods were able to do they plead Goddess Durga for help.

Goddess Durga heard their plea and fought a fierce battle with Mahishasur which lasted for days. Eventually she defeated him and was able to save the whole universe.

People celebrate this victory each year by fasting for nine days and conducting prayers and various religious ceremonies.

Sabudana also known as Tapioca pearls is a rich in Carbohydrates. Since, while fasting you may get low in energy, Carbohydrates will give you the required energy to keep going for nine days.

Sabudana Khichdi is a light dish which is prepared using Sabudana aka Tapioca pearls, Potatoes and Peanuts. With very simple ingredients it will hardly take 20 mins or so to prepare this tasty dish.

Rajgira Puri is an absolute no miss this Navratri festival. Simple to cook and amazingly tasty is what we will call this dish.

In around 15 mins you have an excellent fulfilling dish ready to be consumed during Vrat with either some Coriander Chutney, or Vrat Ke Aloo.
