Fasting in medical terms is referred to a person who has not eaten overnight or for more than 8 – 12 hrs. Recently fasting is gaining quite a lot of popularity as a weight loss mechanism however one should be very careful when going under such transformation to your health diet. In limited quantity you can have some of the fasting food mentioned here to alter food habit in controlled condition and reap health benefits. Sabudana Khichdi requires very limited ingredients and is a quick and easy dish to make during Vrat such as JanamashtamiNavratriMaha Shivratri etc.

Sabudana Khichdi is a popular cuisine in many part of India especially Indore, Madhya Pradesh and neighboring regions. You can easily enjoy this delicacy in Sarafa Market, Chappan Dukan and other food joints. The dish is especially served, topped with famous Indori Falahari Mixture and potato chips. Making of Sabudana Khichdi at Home

In this section we go through few easy steps which you need to take to make Sabudana Khichdi at home. We have added pictures of milestones so you can validate your progress as you make Sabudana Khichdi.

Pre-preparation of Sabudana Khichdi

Take Tapioca pearls(Sabudana) in a bowl and wash it properly at-least 2 – 3 times.

Now soak it in half cup of water for 3 – 4 hrs. Do not add too much water else they will become sticky while cooking Sabudana Khichdi.

Once Tapioca pearls (Sabudana) is soaked properly they will be double their size.

Preparation of Sabudana Khichdi

Take potatoes in a bowl and wash them properly. Now take 3 cups of water in a pressure cooker and add potatoes to it.

Switch on the flame and take two whistles on medium flame and switch off the flame. Let the pressure release gradually. Boiling potatoes should be easy task but if you have not done it yourself and want to check for more detailed steps, why not check our another dish – Vrat Ke Aloo. Here we are covering more detailed steps for boiling potatoes as required for fast.

Meanwhile, take 1/3 cup Groundnuts in a frying pan and roast them well till they start becoming brown in colour. This will take approx 5 – 7 mins.

Once the ground nuts are roasted take them in a plate and let them cool down.

Once the groundnuts are cooled remove groundnut seed coating (red in colour). You can do this by gradually rubbing them between your palms.

Now you have roasted peanuts to be used for making Sabudana Khichdi. Dispose the seed coating as it is no longer required.

Once the outer covering of roasted peanuts is removed, they are ready to be grounded

Now crush the roasted groundnuts using a rolling pin. You can use a mixer to do this but just give a quick boost and then switch it off. This will ensure that you do not finely ground the peanuts.

By now the pressure in the pressure cooker would have been released and you are ready to peel the potatoes. After peeling the potatoes cut them into small pieces.

Making Sabudana Khichdi

Chop the green chillies into small pieces and you are ready to make the Sabudana Khichdi.

To make Sabudana Khichdi take a frying pan and put it on high flame. Now add Clarified butter to it.

Meanwhile take soaked Tapioca pearls (Sabudana) in a large bowl and add boiled potato pieces to it. Top it up with the grounded groundnuts aka peanuts and add Rock Salt and Red Chillies powder to it.

Use a large spoon or a Spatula to mix all the ingredients properly.

You are now ready to cook Sabudana Khichdi.

By now the clarified butter would be hot and you can add Cumin seeds and chopped green chillies to it. Run it for less than a minute.

Now add Tapioca pearls (Sabudana) mixture prepared earlier to it.

Mix it well and cook for another 2 – 3 mins.

Now, close the flame and cover the frying pan with a plate or frying pan lid for another 5 mins.

Your Tapioca pearls (Sabudana) Khichdi or Sabudana Khichdi is ready to be served. But before that, add some chopped Coriander leaves to garnish it.

Sabudana Khichdi can be served on its own, topped with some Coriander leaves and some lime juice. For extra flavour and to make Sabudana Khichdi a bit more spicy add falahari mixture on top and enjoy a good meal.

Chef Recommendation for Sabudana Khichdi

  • Tapioca pearls or Sabudana soaking time for Sabudana Khichdi depends on type of Sabudana. If your Sabudana becomes too soft while washing them before soaking then don’t soak them and you can make Sabudana Khichdi instantly. As per our experience with this Sabudana your Sabudana Khichdi will be too sticky and the flavour may not be that good so we don’t recommend it.
  • Since Vegetable oil is not recommended to cook fasting food hence we used Clarified butter for cooking. You can also use ground nut oil for cooking.
  • Since roasted peanuts are now days available readily in market, you can make your life more easy by using them instead.
  • You can prepare roasted peanuts in large quantity and keep them stocked for long period of time. At-least 1 – 2 months subjected to weather conditions.

  • 1/2 cup Tapioca pearls Sabudana
  • 100 gm Potato Aloo
  • 10 gm Green Chillies Hari Mirch
  • 1/3 cup Groundnuts Moongfali
  • 1/2 tbsp Clarified Butter Ghee to Cook
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds Jeera
  • 1 tsp Rock Salt Sendha Namak
  • 1 tsp Red Chillies Powder Lal Mirch Powder

  • Take Tapioca pearls(Sabudana) in a bowl and wash it properly at-least 2 – 3 times.

  • Now soak it in half cup of water for 3 – 4 hrs. Do not add too much water else they will become sticky while cooking Sabudana Khichdi. Once Tapioca pearls (Sabudana) is soaked properly they will be double their size.

  • Take potatoes in a bowl and wash them properly. Now take 3 cups of water in a pressure cooker and add potatoes to it.

  • Switch on the flame and take two whistles on medium flame and switch off the flame. Let the pressure release gradually.
  • Meanwhile, take 1/3 cup Groundnuts in a frying pan and roast them well till they start becoming brown in colour. This will take approx 5 – 7 mins.

  • Once the ground nuts are roasted take them in a plate and let them cool down. Once the groundnuts are cooled remove groundnut seed coating (red in colour) and you can dispose the seed coating.

  • Take a frying pan and put it on high flame. Now add Clarified butter to it.
    1/2 tbsp Clarified Butter
  • Meanwhile take soaked Tapioca pearls (Sabudana) in a large bowl and add boiled potato pieces to it. Top it up with the grounded groundnuts aka peanuts and add Rock Salt and Red Chillies powder to it. Mix them well.
    1/2 cup Tapioca pearls, 100 gm Potato, 1/3 cup Groundnuts, 1 tsp Rock Salt, 1 tsp Red Chillies Powder
  • By now the clarified butter would be hot and you can add Cumin seeds and chopped green chillies to it. Run it for less than a minute.
    1/2 tbsp Clarified Butter, 1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds, 10 gm Green Chillies
  • Now add Tapioca pearls (Sabudana) mixture prepared earlier to it and mix them well.
    1/2 cup Tapioca pearls
  • Cook for another 2 – 3 mins and close the flame. Cover the frying pan for another 5 mins.
  • Your Tapioca pearls (Sabudana) Khichdi or Sabudana Khichdi is ready to be served. But before that, add some chopped Coriander leaves to garnish it.
