Mulled Wine aka Spiced Wine is a popular drink during Christmas and New Year. If it is Christmas time and you didn't had a glass of Mulled Wine then we would say you definitely missed out on something this year. Since it is served warm, it is a good companion for cold winter nights. Mulled Wine recipe is quite versatile and people make Mulled Wine in many different ways using many different spices. Some people often add some other spirits such as Rum or Vodka in addition to other ingredients.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients for Mulled Wine

  • 750 ml Red Wine
  • 1 Clementine
  • 1/2 Lemon
  • 1/2 Lime
  • 100 g Caster Sugar
  • 4 Bay Leaves
  • 2 Star Anise
  • 1 Nutmeg
  • 6 Cloves
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick
  • 1/4 tsp Black Pepper Powder
  • 4 Cardamom Pods

Instructions

How To Make Mulled Wine

  • Use a kitchen knife or peeler to peel zest of lemon, lime and Clementine.
    1 Clementine, 1/2 Lemon, 1/2 Lime
  • Take a large deep pan and pour Caster Sugar into it. Now add Bay leaves, Star Anise, Cardamom Pods, Cloves, Cinnamon Stick, Grated Nutmeg, Black Pepper powder and Zest of Clementine, Lemon and Lime to it.
    1 Clementine, 1/2 Lemon, 100 g Caster Sugar, 4 Bay Leaves, 2 Star Anise, 1 Nutmeg, 6 Cloves, 1 Cinnamon Stick, 1/4 tsp Black Pepper Powder, 4 Cardamom Pods, 1/2 Lime
  • Now, squeeze the citrus fruits on top of the Ingredients. Now put the pan on medium flame.
  • Pour ~ 1/4 bottle of Red Wine into the pan and stir the mixture ~3 - 5 mins or until the Sugar is dissolved and a slightly thick syrup is formed.
    750 ml Red Wine
  • Now pour remaining Red Wine into the mixture and cook for another 5 mins. Please ensure not to boil the mixture else you will loose Alcohol in it.
  • Now switch off the flame and let the spices infuse with the Red Wine.
  • Use a Ladle to serve the warm Mulled Wine to your guests. If you prefer then garish it with a thin slice of Clementine.

Notes

Few considerations while preparing and serving the cocktail -
  • There is usually no specific list of spices however you can choose to add more spices such as Fennel Seeds, Ginger or Allspice in addition or replacement of any spices mentioned in the recipe.
  • Do not add too much citrus fruit zest as it can make the Mulled Wine a little too bitter.
  • Do not boil Mulled Wine too much else you will loose its Alcohol content.
  • Do not add all of the Red Wine in one go as in such case you may loose lot of Alcohol while preparing Mulled Wine.
  • Gently warm Mulled Wine before serving
  • You can also add a little amount of honey along with caster sugar while making the syrup as mentioned in the recipe.
