Ingredients

Main Ingredients for Kala Chana Chaat

  • 150 g Black Chickpeas Kala Chana
  • 1 cup chopped Onion Pyaaz
  • 1 cup chopped Tomatoes Tamatar
  • 15 g Green Chillies Hari Mirch
  • 1 tsp Table Salt Namak or As per taste
  • 2 tsp Chaat Masala
  • 1 tsp Kashmiri Red Chillies Powder Kashmiri Lal Mirch Powder
  • 1 tsp Black Salt Kala Namak
  • 1 Lemon

Garnishing

  • Few Coriander Leaves for Garnishing

Instructions

Pre-Preparation Steps to make Kala Chana Chaat

  • Soak Kala Chana or Brown Chickpeas or Black Chickpeas in water for 5 - 6 hrs or overnight before you start preparing the dish.
    150 g Black Chickpeas
  • Before starting preparation, check by pressing one or two Kala Chana seeds with your fingers. If you are able to gently press them with your finger then they are ready to be boiled else let them soak for a little bit more time.
  • Once done, Wash soaked Kala Chana with fresh water and you are ready to start your preparation.

Preparation Steps to make Kala Chana Chaat

  • Take soaked Kala Chana in a Pressure cooker, add 1/4 tbsp Salt, 3 cups of water and switch on the gas. Take 2 whistles on high flame while 3 whistles when the gas flame is set to low. Now turn off the burner and let the pressure gradually release from the Pressure cooker.
    150 g Black Chickpeas
  • While the Kala Chana boils and the pressure is released, chop green chillies and Coriander leaves. If you have not chopped Onions and Tomatoes then you should chop them now.
    1 cup chopped Onion, 15 g Green Chillies, Few Coriander Leaves, 1 cup chopped Tomatoes

How to make Kala Chana Chaat

  • Remove water from boiled Kala Chana and take it in a large bowl.
    150 g Black Chickpeas
  • Now add chopped Onions, Tomatoes and Green Chillies to it. Now sprinkle Table Salt, Red Chillies Powder, Chaat Masala and Black Salt to it and mix it well.
    1 cup chopped Onion, 1 cup chopped Tomatoes, 15 g Green Chillies, 1 tsp Table Salt, 2 tsp Chaat Masala, 1 tsp Kashmiri Red Chillies Powder, 1 tsp Black Salt
  • Now squeeze fresh lime or lemon juice to Chaat and mix it well. If you do not have fresh lime you can use lemon water which is available in market.
    1 Lemon
  • Kala Chana Masala Chaat is ready to be served. Just add few Coriander leaves for garnishing.

Notes

Few Considerations while cooking and serving -
  • Kala Chana or Black Chickpeas are very hard and need to be soaked properly. It is better to add sufficient water so that it gets cooked properly. Experiment with the quantity of water to get the right balance.
  • If you do not have Fresh Lemon or Lime, then you can use Lemon or Lime water available in market to make Kala Chana Chaat.
  • Kala Chana once boiled can be used within a day or two to make the Chaat however once you have mixed the spices and lemon consume it fresh or with a couple of hours as the taste may change and the Chaat gets spoiled.
  • While serving, keep an extra quarter of lemon or lime so a person can add more if required based on their preference.
